I agree with Pearl completely. We MUST rid the country and the world of the George W. Bush presidency and all its trimmings. But that being said, I am sincerely sorry that John Kerry is our nominee. When I am asked for reasons why one should not vote for Bush, I can list several right off the top of my head. When I am asked why one should vote for Kerry, the only reason that comes to mind immediately is that he is NOT George W. Bush. Kerry appears to lack the capacity to talk straight to the American people. I get the feeling he is delivering hypotheses and rambling streams of consciousness rather than presenting clearly thought-out and considered concepts. Whether he threw ribbons or medals over that fence during the Viet Nam war protests, is not in itself important. However, it once again, adds to the perception that the man cannot express himself honestly and completely the first time around. It's almost as if he has to think about and read the reaction of the public before he decides which statements he is going to stick with. I lived in Massachusetts for five years, and I remember people saying similar things about him even back in the mid-80s. And I am talking about people who actually, in many cases, supported him. They simply felt the man is more concerned with saying what he thinks the voters want to hear, rather than how he honestly feels in his gut. We're obviously stuck with Kerry for this election, and I WILL vote for him. When he wins, I will keep my fingers crossed that he will be worthy of that vote. I was a war protestor also and feel that I would have liked Kerry to take a much stronger position about exiting from Iraq. HOWEVER, regardless of his motives (more votes?), we MUST get rid of the current administration and the plus with Kerry is that should he get into office, he will be more able to meet with the rest of the world who will be happy to have a change of regime to talk to, ditto for the UN. We can then voice our concerns as an anti-war coalition which will have much more effect, especially if we are strongly organized, with a democratic administration than the present one. He has also made strong statements about the role of Halliburton, et. al. in Iraq's "reconstruction" and this is another area where our voices could be effective. Please, people, don't throw your votes away and although I appreciate your progressive principles, (I am one of you) we have a terrible battle on our hands and must at least get the door open enough to have an impact. I think Kerry is an intelligent man (what a contrast to Bush), which is in his favor as to being able to recognize what works and what doesn't. No one running for the democratic presidency could be elected if they took a purely progressive stand and it is up to us to have our voices heard in hopefully, a Kerry administration. At least we will get rid of the Rumsfelds, Ashcrofts and ilk and hope that decent people will replace them. It is not a perfect world, will never be, and the fight must continue.
