They came from all over, Maine to California, in all shapes, sizes, colors,
ages, female and male to practice our fundamental right for peaceful
assembly in that beautiful space, the mall framed between the Capitol and
the phallic symbol of the Washington monument. George Bush, of course, was
out of town and the procession cut way short of the White House South
perimeter. Reading from the banners, there were law students from Harvard,
medical students from Hopkins, clergy and lay people from Judson Memorial
Church in New York City, Mountain Mamas from West Virginia and on and on. I
am sure you've seen some of the tv coverage ... Gloria Steinem, Hillary
Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Whoopie Goldberg ... and all the elder ikons
(foremothers) of the struggle for reproductive rights. There were even some
printed posters and people to carry them who confessed to being "Republicans
for Choice." As we made the bend into Pennsylvania Avenue we met the full
force of the pro-lifers, some silent in front of huge posters of a bloody
fetus, some jeering, taunting, many with home-made signs equally serious in
their convictions, followed by young Catholic seminarians in black praying
the rosary making the sign of the cross over the marchers. Are these, on
either side, the fanatics Eric Hoffer was talking about in The True
Believer? One wishes not to be one. One of us started a chant: God is for
choice; God is for choice ...
As we were approaching the metro station for our return to the suburbs we
ran into a group of 16 men who appeared cartoon-like of uniform height in
drab gray suits (we think a delegation from China in DC on other business)
staring at us with our loud posters, T-shirts and comfort clothes. We
smiled and chanted: THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE! THIS IS WHAT
DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!
