Sorry, I'm rambling..
I don't know why spammers WASTE THEIR TIME and always try to infect me
with viruses when I only use Linux and their Windows type viruses can't
infect me and my SpamBouncer and SpamAssassin combo procmail filters catch
everything AND only pass what I want them to pass -- but, they keep on
trying.
Just like the hackers, and one of the worse hackers is this jerk from
Estonia, who likes to brag about his exploits on a couple of hacker sites
-- who takes obivous vulnerabilities and probes them simply because he can
and he uses scripts which hackers share with each other and finds out
about vulnerabilities on bugzilla and then gives people grief ---- LIKE,
why do it? He isn't proving a thing. Every operating system in the world
has holes or they couldn't work. If you don't open up ports to services
you don't get any services.
So that means those of us who can have to put on our other hats and if we
don't open up sand boxes where they can play and we can watch, at least
capture enough packets to examine them for source and go after these
idiots. The problem is how do you get anyone in Estonia to turn off
someone's access to the net? You don't so we will always have hackers.
This is obviously not something I wanted to talk about so I will just say
all of you with proxy servers and software which alert you to probes, be
aware of the fact that you will be probed constantly and you have to
remember if you use Windows (my suggestion is to get Linux or an Apple) is
to NEVER open attachments. NEVER.. And stop ActiveX and Java (not
javascript) from untrusted sources. J.D. will tell you more if anyone has
any questions about any of this.
And secondly the more you do on the net the more likely you are of being
assaulted, spammed, hacked, and eventually shit happens!
If you are a blogger and this is one more trend (every trend is a fad and
some endure but MOST do not) in a long line of trends, do yourself a favor
and set yourself up with a web site but forget the blogging because 70% of
blogs are abandoned because they're never read and most blogs are part of
the some old problem caused by too much of anything. There are only a
handful of successful blogs. That is all. And many of them, I have noticed
lately, are switching to their own CMS (content management systems)
software so they can control more of what goes on there and keep out the
crap.
Mailing lists are not what they once were anymore than bulletin boards or
message boards are what they once were. Yahoo killed mailing lists (with
their hundreds of thousands of yahoogroups) in the way they were
appropriately used a few years ago with yahoogroups. Now who pays
attention. For serious research and discussion you can't even expect to
find that in message boards because there are toooo many of them. All of
these things are trends and trends are fads which SHAPE CHANGE. Nothing
stays the same and everything becomes something else.
For bloggers my advice is to get a web site and build CONTENT. If you
provide content you can influence and make a difference. Nothing else
works. Blogging is keeping a journal and who wants to read someone else's
journal? Not me. News is available from the source, so why waste
bandswidth by cross-posting news? Only content matters.
There is a similarity to television (and radio). Once there were a few
stations which provided everything you wanted to know. Now there are so
many that 2/3rds of them have to run infomercials just to stay viable and
all the rest are a combination of yellow journalism and worthless rumors
and inuendos. Television with cable and satellites have become
information overload and we have learned that more isn't better, it is
overload and diversionary.
Reactionary conservative talk radio appeals to prurient interests,
simplicity (less thinking and more gut reactions) and slander. I am sick
of it but can't get the new Air America liberal radio where I live and not
sure I would like it if we did have access to it here.
It isn't that the old days were better. It is that in a lot of ways they
were....... but progress requires going forward by changing what was bad
and improving on the rest. And we have lost our way. And this seems more
like a blog than anything worthwhile -- so sorry about the rant and
rambling.
