One reads that Bush is consumed with the details of winning reelection.
He certainly is not focused on such basics as protecting us here in
NYC from another terrorist attack. The report above is the second
instance (one prior to 9/11) in which several individuals were turned in
for plotting attacks on our terribly vulnerable subway system. Since
that time there has been no effective attempt to protect it. How many
more little cells -- perhaps better put together -- are on the ready?

Subway clerk booths have been closed down as an economy measure by our
independent MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) leaving hundreds
of subway entrances totally unguarded -- particularly in those stations
with less traffic and/or alternative entrances. I will be entering one
on my return from classes Tuesday through which anyone could carry
whatever unobserved to board either of the two major East and West side
IRT expresses that terminate there.

We are told that our police are being pulled from the outer boroughs to
guard Madison Square Garden, leaving us further unprotected precisely
where we have learned (from the recent Madrid example) that terrible
damage can be done.

We should have had our police strategically stationed to protect the
above while our national guard was put to work protecting the Republican
Convention -- or vice versa. But we have no homeland defense. The
Bush administration is too busy running for re-election to worry about
such mundane matters affecting the blue states.

We ought to be urging all to stay home during this extremely perilous 4
days. I wish that our damned media would act as the fourth estate
rather than embedded beneficiaries of this disastrous administration.
Perhaps we should be organizing a general strike or something to focus
attention on our vulnerability. Many tell me they avoid our subways
whenever they can, but too many are captive to them -- as are our
overextended troops now isolated as random targets in Iraq and Afghanistan.
