@Laurion, thanks so much for weighing in on this. The windows update edb was also getting logged with this exception just when I fired up the VM connected via firewire...I suspect this is all due to the Win7 1394 driver bug reports I have found elsewhere online. I think this is related: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981613 I am pretty sure my disk is okay after running ckdsk (and it is pretty new). I guess I have to stick with USB until this is resolved.
