Though my stomach just churned a little bit when I read this line ...
"My real test is much more complicated"
Complicated tests usually mean complicated code under test, which is a
bit of a "bad smell" for me, perhaps by identifying that our test is
complicated you have also identified the need to simplify the
implementaiton under test.
(Just my two cents' worth).
