Rhythmbox is, for all intents and purposes, a single window application.

Pidgin, for example, is not. It has a buddy list and then zero or more
individual chat windows. It would be madness to close the whole
application just for closing the buddy list.

The "Notification Area" was never really intended for hiding
applications away, and there's certainly no concept of it in Window
Manager-land, which is why it makes it difficult to decide what is best.
This is merely the other side of the argument. I personally am sitting
on the fence. :)
