Devrel will depend on a working build first, so sticking with just 'make' to see if that works will be a good first step.
If you can run 'make' and put the output in a gist or pastebin for me I can try and take a look at it. Are you building from an untarred source tarball of Riak 1.2.1, or cloning from Github?
