With Riak 1.4 I think there thre reasons why you shouldn't avoid it:
1. Less I/O overhead compressing objects.
2. Better compression.
3. Cause of 1 and 2, better performance.
Try Riak 1.4 and tail -f /var/log/riak/console.log and see the new
features version.
