inplaceSelect rendering problem in IE: big white box

I'm getting a poor rendering of inplaceSelect drop-down menus in ie6 (ie7 is
unknown, FF renders fine).
Sometimes there is a large white box area rendered for the menu but the menu is
substantially smaller than the box.
Please see attached picture.
There's also an issue of unnecessary scroll-bars being rendered, but I think
that's already been covered in another ticket. The issues may be related if
the menu rendering code is having problems figuring out how big a box to
draw(?).
