This is due to an upstream problem with the asciidoctor-maven-plugin. I
reported it here:
https://github.com/asciidoctor/asciidoctor-maven-plugin/issues/68
I implemented a workaround of specifying the imagesDir option in the asciidoc
front matter. Closing the issue as setting the option via this option is
preferable, since the images will then be visible on github.
