The Mother of All Tax Battles
Posted: 09 Sep 2008 12:42 PM CDT

It was Day 70 of the budget showdown and stand-off in California yesterday. The
Democrats and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger desperately want to raise taxes to
close a $15 billion budget gap; however, all Republican state legislators but
one have signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and are sticking to the promise
they made to their constituents to oppose and vote against any and all efforts
to raise taxes.

Since California requires a 2/3 super-majority vote to approve the state’s
budget, Republicans are able to stop the Democrats from raising taxes even
though they’re in the minority. And it’s driving California Democrats
absolutely bonkers.

When asked about the Tax Pledge in an interview, Democrat Assemblyman Mark
Desaulnier complained about Republicans who signed it and “locked themselves
in” to solving the budget crisis without raising taxes. “Why bother having
representative government if you’re going to sign away your ability to be
open-minded?” the tax-hiking liberal Democrat whined.

What a dipstick. This campaign promise is the very ESSENCE of representative
government. By signing the Tax Pledge and running on it, the voters of every
Republican’s district knew going in that the Republican candidate wasn’t going
to vote for higher taxes. And the voters elected them with that understanding.
They decidedly did NOT vote for them to be “open minded” on raising taxes. This
isn’t a breakdown in representative government, it’s the epitome of it. These
Republicans are representing the position supported by the majority of voters
in the district.
Folks, this shows just how powerful the Taxpayer Protection Pledge can be in
protecting taxpayers…as long as Pledge signers don’t buckle under pressure and
break their promise. After all, we ARE talking about Republicans here.

What’s the Big Deal?

In an interview with Bill O’Reilly on FOX News broadcast last night, Barack
Obama actually made this ridiculously stupid statement: “If I am sitting
pretty, and you’ve got a waitress who is making minimum wage plus tips, and I
can afford it and she can’t — what’s the big deal for me to say, ‘I’m going to
pay a little bit more.’ That is neighborliness.”

Now, I could spend a week explaining what the “big deal” is for this kind of
redistribution of wealth, but I have a big conference to put on in Las Vegas
next week and just don’t have the time. So I’m inviting you all to have at it.
