Why Voter Registration Fraud Matters

A new friend and reader of News & Views forwarded me a Boston Globe column
written last week by Yvonne Abraham. Abraham defended ACORN’s fraudulent
activities with the following…
“Voter registration fraud isn’t the same as voting fraud. If somebody registers
Groucho Marx to vote in Ohio, that’s voter registration fraud. But that doesn’t
affect the outcome of an election, unless somebody shows up at the poll with
the glasses and the moustache and the cigar and tries to cast a ballot. That’s
voting fraud, and it almost never happens. In fact, between 2002 and 2005, the
Department of Justice convicted only 26 people of voting fraud, most of them
for voting when they were ineligible, said Lorraine Minnite, a political
scientist at Barnard College who has studied the records.”
Bull.
First, just because the Justice Department has convicted “only 26 people of
voting fraud,” that doesn’t mean a whole lot more of it hasn’t gone on. Voting
fraud, I’m betting, simply hasn’t been a top priority at the federal level.
After all, we have folks trying to carry potentially lethal toothpaste and
deodorant on planes to worry about!
Combine that with the Left constantly screaming “voter suppression” anytime
anyone even remotely suggests that someone might not be legally eligible to
vote, it’s not surprising that many local officials won’t touch this issue with
the proverbial ten-foot pole either. And with so few jurisdictions requiring
photo ID to vote, how would intentional and sophisticated voter fraud ever be
detected by the locals or the feds?
The second and more subtle issue I’d take with Abraham’s lame defense of ACORN
is the notion that “voter registration fraud…doesn’t affect the outcome of an
election.”
Not.
Voter registration is a powerful factor in recruiting quality candidates and
raising money. It’s far more difficult, for example, to persuade a
credible Republican candidate to run in a district with a large Democrat voter
registration advantage, and even more difficult to raise money for such a
race. Donors, party leaders and the media use voter registration numbers to
gauge a candidate’s chances, even though voter turnout is actually more
important in the long run. The fact is, political money and support flow in
the direction of the perceived winner.
So voter registration fraud ABSOLUTELY can and does have a significant effect
on elections. And ACORN officials who have been a part of the fraud their
organization has committed - either voter fraud OR voter registration fraud -
ought to be fitted with prison pinstripes and tossed in the hoosegow with Andy
Dick as their cellmate.
Papers, Please

While Barack Obama is indeed a socialist by virtue of his loving embrace of
wealth redistribution, President George W. Bush may go down in history as
something far worse, presiding over a growing national “security” apparatus
which would make even Big Brother blush.
“The Department of Homeland Security will take over responsibility for checking
airline passenger names against government watch lists beginning in January,
and will require travelers for the first time to provide their full name, birth
date and gender as a condition for boarding commercial flights,” reported the
Washington Post last Thursday. “The changes, to be phased in next year, will
apply to 2 million daily passengers aboard all domestic flights and
international flights to, from or over the United States.”
The responsibility for checking passengers to see if they appear on Homeland
Security’s “no-fly” list has belonged to the airlines up to this point. Now the
feds are taking over. First Bush nationalized education, then prescription
drugs, then the housing market, then the banking industry and now it appears
he’s moving in on the airlines before he leaves office, as well.
But what if you - as an innocent, free American who has done absolutely nothing
wrong to warrant any suspicion whatsoever - do not wish to subject yourself to
the “Papers, please” inquisition by apparatchiks of an all-powerful federal
bureaucracy before boarding your flight? The Post explains…
“Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) chief Kip Hawley said yesterday that, except in rare
situations, passengers who do not provide the additional information will not
be given boarding passes. ‘If you don’t provide the data, then you are going to
put yourself in a position where you are probably going to be a selectee,’
subject at a minimum to greater future security scrutiny, Chertoff said in
remarks announcing the program at Reagan National Airport.”
This is scary, scary stuff…and it’s not even Halloween yet.
