Sounds good, and it may be, but I’ll bet most people reading this think that means it’s free. Uh, uh! Every year retirees receive Form SSA-4926-SM in the mail telling them how much their benefit will be, and how much will be deducted for medical insurance and the SocSec prescription drug plan of their choice. In 2010, a person with annual benefits of $9,090 choosing the PPO Plan, receives $7,320/yr cash. $134/mo is deducted for medical insurance, and $13/mo for the prescription plan, leaving $610/mo to live on. There’s other sneaky things like copays (Office visit $15, Specialist $35 and hospital emergency $50) and the infamous prescription drug “donut” which caps out at $2,700/yr. But the $2,700 is NOT what the govt pays, it is what the elderly citizen AND the govt pay combined. The price varies from prescription drug to prescription drug. It starts with a retail price, minus a “discount” with remainder split between the govt and the retiree. 80/20? Where’s there’s a PPO there’s and HMO which charges less and covers less. In 2010, a person with benefits of $20,911 chooses the HMO Plan, he/she receives cash $19,620/yr. $107/mo is deducted for medical insurance (no charge for the prescription plan). An HMO office visit is $10, a specialist $30 and Hospital $50, leaving $1,635/mo to live on. Of course, you can always purchase supplementary insurance from AARP. And, there’s other tricks seniors learn to survive, like how to get elderly housing or what stores have senior discounts on which days. THE ABOVE FIGURES ARE TAKEN FROM ACTUAL SSA 2010 FORMS So if MediCare health benefits are extended to 55-year-olds, they can expect to pay out-of pocket $1,770 annual insurance premium for the PPO, or $1,291 annually if they choose HMO coverage, plus co-pays and a % of the prescription drug benefit up to the $2,700 donut. You know how they expect to start charging the new inductees for 4 years before paying out any benefits? Well, that’s not a new trick. FDR collected payroll taxes for 5 years before the first Social Security check was issued. Sorta blows a donut hole in that misinformation propaganda that it was always meant to be a pay-as-you-go plan, huh? Social Security They announced seniors would not see an increase in their SocSec checks because there was no inflation. Hmm.
