If you still think our law makers in Washington are sane consider this. Due to the state of the national economy, many people can’t find work. Normally those who lost jobs would get 13 or 26 weeks paid by the state taxes on employers. After that, the poorest jobless among them might qualify for welfare, medicaid or/and other aid. On occasion, a few states might run out of unemployment funds and “borrow” money from the feds which would be "replenished" by increasing state employment taxes on employers. This time is different. The fedl govt attached hooks into the extensions, e.g., laid off part-time workers would qualify for benefits for the first time. Many state law makers took the th easy way out, swallowed the poison pill and re-wrote their labor laws to get the fedl dollars. The length of the extensions - and the debt states owe the feds – have been extended as much as 99 weeks! Since no one has invented the free lunch yet, employers will be taxed by their respective states in order to repay the bribe. Now, I’ve got a question. Have you gotten your 2009 1040 yet? On the front page it says that recipients must pay fedl income tax on unemployment benefits over $2,400. Not only does your state have to pay back (with interest?) the fedl loan, some of the money paid to the unemployed – including the portion financed by employers – must be paid to the fedl govt in form of income taxes. What a racket! The feds give states money and get repaid by the state AND collect taxes from the unemployed! Now maybe you expect me to blame Obama and the Democrat Congress. Well, if you thought so, you’d be wrong. Unemployment Compensation was made taxable in the roaring 90’s by another Democrat Congress and a another man from Hope. This is typical of sneaky govt law makers. Maybe you thought seniors don’t have to pay taxes on Social Security checks. Well, you’d be wrong again. Congress taxes workers on their gross earnings when they were earned and tax it again when they give it back as Social Security. They give with one hand, and they take their cut with the other. There’s one more dirty little secret you need to know. You know what the payroll dept calls unemployment taxes? Employee compensation, along with other such notables such as the company portion of FICA, vacations, sick time used and you guessed it, group health insurance expense. All these things are part of the employee compensation package. Or to put it another way, every employee earns their group insurance, vacation pay, social security, workmens comp & insurance, etc in lieu of a bigger pay check. Okay, the law makers aren’t insane. I was kidding. The sneaks just depend on a lot of people not to think these thing thru to their logical conclusion. PS Whose tax dollars are paying all those $70K govt employees to administer, track and audit all these benefits/taxes they gave, er you earned? Hint. April 15 is coming. .
