Stop Texas from becoming a National "Read ID" State May 4, 2011 Dear Fellow Texans, Last week the Senate passed bill SB 9, and now it goes on to the House. We MUST stop it there!!! >From the Ellis County Observer: Austin — During testimony before the Senate Homeland Security & Public Safety Committee on March 30th Steven McCraw, Director of the Department of Public Safety, announced that the passage of SB 9 will bring Texas into compliance with the Federal REAL ID Act. This means that not only will Texas driver’s licenses be transformed into a NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION CARD, but it will also hold biometric and other personal information. Senate Bill 9, authored by Senator Tommy Williams of The Woodlands, allocates $70 MILLION to the implementation by way of an increase of DL renewal fees. McCraw says that the Department needs $63 MILLION to upgrade equipment. This will make sure that DPS is able to collect, store, and maintain biometric information, including ALL fingerprints (rather than just the thumb) and facial scans. $133 MILLION over the next two years will also be used to create six “mega centers” to handle the influx of “business.” TAKE ACTION! Call your Representative and tell them that a REAL ID implementation bill has passed the Senate, it is on its way to the House, and that you urge them to vote NO on SB 9! Unless you want your expensive federalized ID card, with data surveillance state capacity, you’d better speak up now before DHS does it for you. The Feds have been trying to get this implemented at the state level for many years. Several states have said NO! Texas has said NO in the past — let's not allow them to get away with it this time.
