Texas redistricting and Bike Lanes This is an update and a reminder to join at the Arlington Tea Party.org web site as well as the Lone Star Tea Party site! KB GRIT It only took us 12 hrs after the Nov. election to figure out 2 of our local legislators were going to throw us under the bus for a liberal Texas Speaker Of The House (joe straus). Since then conservatives have been actually losing ground in the redistricting battle, even though they hold a 101 seat majority in the House. Our fears of a liberal leaning Joe Straus has come true. It is up to us to hold Diane Patrick and Barbara Nash accountable for the failures of this session and the actions of joe straus.. Regardless of what we say or do the folks down in Austin are doing exactly what they want to do. Like the news media they completely disregard TP conservatives. Never was this more true tan when Rick Rose and I went to speak with Patrick during the straus selection and she refused to come out of her office to talk to us and yes we do live in her district. The legislators have been very busy gerrymandering the districts in order to protect themselves, their favorites, including democrats. To hell with anything else, like protecting Texans from an out of control federal government or securing our borders from drug cartels or God knows what. They're all to busy circling the wagons to protect themselves from us. What's left now is congressional redistricting. Grass Roots Institute of Texas (GRIT) has sent out a plea for help from Texas conservatives. As an outsider and a novice it looks as if everyone and their brother can put forward a redistricting plan, including GRIT. We are going to post the letter they sent out in the LSTP Blog and Atp/ mel's corner. there are some very interesting facts they bring out about hispanic voters that we think you need to know. When the session is over we'll have Bill Zedler in to discuss the highs and lows of this session and why more didn't get accomplished for the conservative cause. We are sure there are some good things but the bad is out in front right now, way out! SOS Howdy all, Recently, we spent a week vacationing in England, first touring the beautiful English countryside, then spending our last two days sightseeing in London. All the while we counted bicycles and observed how the various cities accommodate bike riding. Here is what we found. First, let's talk about English cities similar to Arlington. Just as we do, English cities and hamlets have their share of single family homes with yards along with modest multi-story downtowns as well. In these cities you see few bike riders and most bike facilities are off-road, where the occasional bike rider shares the sidewalk with pedestrians. Just as here, cars are the preeminent mode of transportation and the streets remain geared to that reality. London is different animal. Bikes are everywhere, but what surprised us is that there are virtually no dedicated bike lanes in the city. Instead, the city relies on bike route signage, with the result that bicycle riders weave in and out of traffic, sometimes at breakneck speed. Why are there so many bike riders in London? Well, it's not because of bike lanes-there aren't any to speak of. Instead, a confluence of several conditions make substantial bike use inevitable. With or without bike lanes, substantial bike ridership occurs naturally and at very little public cost or government intervention whenever people find themselves living in a very densely populated environment with substantial traffic congestion and, in the case of London, gasoline at $10 per gallon. Until similar conditions exist in Arlington, bicycle ridership in Arlington will be mostly recreational and otherwise incidental, no matter how some may wish otherwise.
