WE NEED YOU THERE This Tuesday, June 14th at 6:30 PM the Mayor and City Council will meet to consider a thoroughfare plan that will affect traffic decisions for Arlington out to the year 2030. This plan is predicated on the idea that even as Arlington's population grows by a projected 90,000, automobile usage in the city will drastically decline in the years ahead as the public switches to bicycles. To give you an example of the thinking of some city planners and, unfortunately, some of our council members, one council member told us that it was vital that Arlington construct bike corridors connecting to neighboring cities so that Arlington residents who wished to could bike to work in Dallas or Fort Worth. Such thinking is silly. We all know, or at least we should, that heavy bike usage occurs only under these conditions: 1. Very dense population with consequentially congested streets, typically further acerbated by very high fuel prices. Even then, car, truck, and bus traffic still overwhelms bicycle use-delivering the vast majority of people and all goods and services to where they need to be. 2. A very low standard of living such as seen in third world countries. Surely those at City Hall don't see this as Arlington's future. Any building for bikes should be directed to where bike riding does occur in Arlington-recreational bike riding within our impressive and growing parks and greenways system. We ask that you do the following: 1) Today, using the link below, contact the Mayor and all members of the City Council and let them know that you want them to vote no on the Thoroughfare Development Plan. 2) When you join us Tuesday, if you can please wear red or blue (our colors), and please bring as many friends, family, and neighbors as you can. City staff is well-connected with the pro-bike lobby (the wear yellow). You can be sure they, too, are getting the word out. 3) Arrive at the Council meeting early enough to fill out a card and mark that you oppose the thoroughfare plan. 4) If we wish to speak at the meeting, also indicate that on the card. 5) When speaking, keep in mind that you are speaking against the thoroughfare plan. Although this plan literally paves the way for on-street bike lanes, it is not the bike plan (which we will also have to kill when it comes up in August). 6) Be there! This meeting matters. A weak showing on our side will encourage pro-bike lane council members to vote for the thoroughfare plan which will in turn make the bike plan possible, leading to loss of on street parking and lowered property values for residents. Copied below are samples of what you'll seen when we show you the complete thoroughfare plan on Tuesday starting at 5:30. Again, if this were a serious street plan addressing realistic needs, we would happily support it. If you'd like to pick up a copy of the complete proposed thoroughfare plan (marked up to show the many bike elements), call the number below and ask for Buddy. We also need folks to distribute flyers and talk to residents on affected streets. Margaret Drive, for example, is being well covered and we are finding solid opposition to on-street bike lanes in front of people's homes.
