If I understand this right, the state of Louisiana is disenfranchising their
voters in the presidential election. Instead of Louisianans votes determining
where their votes are cast, the other 49 states would be the determining
factor. At first blush, it sounds like their Electoral votes would be cast for
the winner.

Nope, that’s not what it says; it says the Electoral votes would go to the
candidate that won the popular votes nationally. So, if neither candidate had a
majority in the Electoral college, La’s electoral votes would go to the winner
of the popular vote in the other 49 states, presumably to get them a majority
in the Electoral College.

Who would benefit from such a law? Certainly not Louisiana voters. It would
benefit the Democrat Party States that have large cities. States like NY, IL,
MA, MI and Calif figure to give Democrats large majority victories. It is
possible for those large numbers to give the Democrats many more votes than
smaller GOP states. So if these Democrat strongholds won the popular among the
49 states, they would get the Electoral College votes from Louisiana to put
them over the top.

How dirty can a dirty trick be before it is unconstitutional?

A message to all members of Southwest Louisiana Tea Party

Just received this from our friends are the Louisiana State Sovereignty
Committee. Please take a few minutes to check it out.

Friends,

The bill in Louisiana ’s Legislature to destroy the Electoral College (EC) as
we have known it – a state-by-state election for president – has passed its
committee obstacles in both the House and Senate.  If it becomes law, Louisiana
’s EC votes for president will be given to the candidate who wins the most
votes nationally, regardless of how we and our fellow Louisianans vote.

It is imperative that we kill this bill to preserve the balance that the U.S.
Constitution established between the large and the small, the urban and the
rural states in the selection of a president.  If we switch to a national vote
for president, the large cities would mainly be responsible for who is selected
every four years, since much of the U.S. population lives in them.

Please call your state senators and representatives and ask them to oppose this
legislation (in the House, it is numbered HB 388; in the Senate, SB 126):  a
phone call sends a more powerful, personal message than e-mail.  But if you do
not feel comfortable calling, then e-mail is perfectly fine.  Whatever the
method, our state legislators need to know that we do not want them tinkering
with the U.S. Constitution in this manner.

Memorial Day reflections:

Below are links to a couple of essays on foreign policy and freedom here at
home for you to read.  (The Abbeville Institute essay will only be available
for a few more days.  Read it while you can.)  We owe it to our soldiers not to
squander the freedom they have fought and died for.

Health Care Compact:

The legislation that would have brought Louisiana into a multi-state agreement
to shield us and other participating states from Obamacare (SB 206) has been
withdrawn from further consideration in this session.

Though it’s a disappointing outcome, I want to thank you for your help in
pushing SB 206 in the Legislature.  When this session is over, our focus needs
to turn toward electing state senators and reps, a governor, etc. who have the
courage to tell Washington, D.C., ‘No’ with or without other states standing by
our side.  If we don’t, they’ll fold as easily as Texas ’s state legislature
did when confronted by the federal government over their legislation to
restrict TSA searches:

But that is an effort for later.  For today, enjoy your time off!

All the best,
