On June 14, 2011, concerned citizens who showed up at the Arlington City
Council meeting to speak in opposition of a proposed Thoroughfare and
Development plan were met with an unprecedented setback from their Mayor,
Robert Cluck.

The outcome from the beginning was controlled as the Mayor limited both sides
to 20 minutes of speaking time. This was done in an effort to make the sides
look equal on camera and to the public. This was unacceptable for a plan that
will impact Arlington for the next 30 years and turn the city's transportation
network on its' head. Five residents spoke in favor of said plan, while over 40
residents were there to speak against it. Despite major opposition to this
plan, only 11 people in opposition were allowed to speak.

When the last resident allowed to speak got up to the microphone, Mayor Cluck
told him he had "10 seconds". This angered several residents who began to call
the Mayor out on his controlled environment.

The Mayor immediately requested police to begin escorting people in the
opposition out. The altercation lasted for nearly 5 minutes, with many
residents shouting out in anger, while concerned citizens were escorted out of
the building by police. This story is best watched rather than told, so here is
a video that shows the entire altercation with captions:

This video has already made its way to several prominent people in the city and
state. Residents are furious about the Mayor's horrendous actions at that
meeting.

Despite the public outcry, as well as the enormous amount of signatures
collected against this plan, the city council still passed the Thoroughfare and
Development plan.  Residents are angry that their right to speak publicly
against the plan was muffled and that the city completely disregarded the will
of the people.

On Tuesday, June 28th, the city council will vote on the even more
controversial Hike and Bike plan, which carries a price tag of $150 million
over 30 years.  The town hall will be packed to the brim with residents both
for and against this plan. The Mayor let everyone in the council chambers know
that he would also be limiting the floor time to concerned citizens at this
meeting.

We anticipate a very heated and emotionally-charged debate at this meeting.  We
encourage your news organization to send a representative to attend/cover this
meeting. There is no doubt this meeting will be talked about long after the
vote has been cast.
