It started with seat belts. Next it was a prohibition of lead gas and then Catalytic converters---and mandatory "safety checks". Then the govt added MBTE to the gas and established different formulas for summer and winter blends. They took control of how much gasoline each refinery could produce and established mandatory down periods for each. And they told them when they must convert to producing heating fuel and when they must quit. All this caused lower gas mileage (and higher prices at the pump) --- so in its wisdom, the govt mandated increased m/p/g. As a result, there were no convertibles built in the USA for years. And muscle car, be gone The govt added food (corn) to the fuel and reversed it's decision on MBTE when it was proved to be a cause of pollution it was supposed to prevent. And then they invented another type of formula (based on weight, number of cylinders, etc) to decide what the mileage of each model was and outlawed mileage claims based on actual road tests. And because it wasn't fair that people living at the start of the pipeline didn't pay as much as those further away, the govt set prices so the rest of the country would subsidize the New Englandstates. During Jimmy Carter's day, they even set an natl speed limit---because they could. They took no account of the difference in environments between places like Wyomingand New York. Double nickles for all. And perhaps the final blow was setting fleet mileage standards. The plan was to limit the number of full-sized autos in favor of smaller cars that required less gas. In order to meet demand of full--sized cars the auto industry sold the govt approved small cars for less than the cost to manufacture and increased the cost of the autos that buyers wanted. And then there were none. These were the management decisions made by the govt that bankrupted our two biggest auto companies and nearly a third. (Ford moved a lot of its auto plants outside of the US.) It also destroyed an American city nick named Car Cityof the World.
