Tony was the sole survivor of his company in WW II. He “played dead” while the Nazi soldiers came and stuck their bayonets into the bodies of the fallen soldiers one by one to make sure they were dead. No prisoners taken. Once upon a time, when I was still in grade school, my parents partnered with Tony to buy a tavern on the Northwest side of Chgo. They found a vacant tavern; they bought new refigerators to keep the beer cold and an ice machine for the drinks; they set up accounts and got the beer companies to deliver; they found a discount liquor store where they had better prices than offered by the liquor salesmen; they even got the syndicate’s juke box ready to go. All they needed was the liquor license issued by the Chicago Shakespere Police Captain. Mom explained to Tony why the license wasn’t coming. After 2 days of calls and waiting, Tony bit the bullet and took her advice. This is how it went down. Tony went to the Shakespere Police Station and asked to see the captain. After a short wait, he was directed to the Captain’s office. He explained the situation, and handed him a book of matches with 2 twenty dollar bills tucked inside.
