AlaskaRepublican Party Convention 2012

Last weekend, I attended my first party convention.  I signed up because it was
time to stand up and defeat Barak Obama for reelection and elect a conservative
majority to both houses of the state legislature.  I expected conservatives to
band together and ready themselves for the fight.  What I got was Occupy Ron
Paul, a bunch of Paulians acting like democrats.  As of today, they appear to
be in charge of the Republican Party.
The sadness in all of this is that the democrats, unions and greens are
standing by laughing their back sides off while the internal fight continues.
And the clock continues to tick toward November.

While I will not try to capture all the festivities, I will pass along a few
impressions.

We knew coming out of the district conventions that the Paulians had organized
well with the goal to capture the party and send all 24 delegates to the
National Convention as votes for Ron Paul.  This is not how the party rules
work, as the delegates are apportioned per the results of the Presidential
Preference Poll last March.  In this poll, with a huge number of participants,
Mitt Romney won, closely followed by Rick Santorum.   Ron Paul was next at 24%
and Newt Gingrich pulled up the rear.   Delegates were split at 8, 8, 6 and 2
respectively.

Yet the Paulians spent the three days of the convention (including the Thursday
night Central Committee meeting) maneuvering to disenfranchise everyone except
their delegates.  As they now hold the party Chairmanship, some of us expect
proposed rules changes that will reopen the approved list of delegates, and
sending only Paulians to the National Convention.  And their plan appears to be
to get the party to pay for their trip out of party campaign funds.  This is
something democrats do.  This is something liberals do.  It is not something
conservatives do.

I along with everyone attending received an inflammatory e-mail Thursday night
claiming to be battle plans for the convention from one Mike Cook of Alaskans
for Ron Paul.  Casey Reynolds posted it in the Northern Right.  The Paulians
immediately denounced the e-mail as a fraud.  Some local conservative
commentators agreed.  I am not so sure, as the Paulians at the convention did
everything they were told to do in the e-mail.  Logic tells me that if they are
doing what they deny they are being told to do, how fraudulent is this e-mail?

You can learn a lot from the header of an e-mail as it forwards from server to
server.  Was able to track it back to a gmail account but not farther.  Still
working on it though.

I sat through a speech by David Eastman who was running for National
Committeeman.  He spent most of the speech complaining about a last minute
rules change allowing Ralph Seekins to run for state senate while being
National Committeeman.  The fact that this had been done the last 3 conventions
was apparently lost on him.  He then went on to insult a retired Army Colonel
by referring to him as an LtCol.  I was personally struck by the arrogance,
insufferable self-righteousness, and condescension.  This was the first time I
had ever seen or listened to him, and he did not make a good impression.  On
the other hand, he would have made a wonderful Brown Shirt.

Joe Miller’s wife, who was involved with the Paulians was elected as one of the
Electors.  This does raise a question, for if the Paulians are really doing the
“tell them whatever they want to hear and do whatever you want to do
afterwards” routine, what guarantee do we have that she will vote for the
Republican should he win the election in November rather than Ron Paul?  Look
up the history of “faithless elector” for more information.

The Paulians elected Russ Millette as new party Chairman.  Nobody outside the
Paulians appear to know him, not unlike John Lindauer in 1998.  After the
convention he spoke to a cheering throng of Paulians, who were doing their in
your face Snoopy dance, yelling chants of “Ron Paul!  Ron Paul!” and “We won’t
go to the back of the bus anymore!”  One wonders if he is only a figurehead,
operating at the behest of Ron Paul campaign manager here in Alaska , Evan
Cutler.  We will see.

Finally, Friday night we saw a huge demonstration and heckling aimed at Lisa
Murkowski and our invited guest Senator John Barrasso.  The Occupy Alaska
wannabees did everything but set up camp in the middle of the room.  It was
most embarrassing, but does nicely demonstrate the anything goes viewpoint and
tactics of this crowd.

All of this made me wonder if Alaska was an aberration or part of a grand
strategy.  If you do a Google search with the keywords “ron paul supporters
hijack convention” you get over a million hits.  Working your way through the
links you find stories about this movement nationwide, with stories about
similar actions in Nevada , Minnesota , the Dakotas, Georgia , Nevada ,
Colorado , etc.  The goal seems to be to stealthily insert Ron Paul delegates
to the national convention and nominate Ron Paul from the floor of the
convention in August.  No mention in any of the articles about defeating and /
or destroying democrats.  No mention about the destruction of the party at the
state and local level by their actions.  This leads me to wonder about who is
really funding and organizing the Ron Paul effort.  If I were a democrat with
access to large quantities of laundered Soros, union or green money, I could
not think of a better place to spend it
than in funding this sort of destruction of Republicans at the state and
grassroots level right on the cusp of getting destroyed at the ballot box in
November.

Given all this, I am skeptical about the Paulian takeover.  While I am
perfectly willing to take a trust but verify position on all their promises, I
heard too much about Ron Paul and too little about defeating and destroying
democrats from this crowd to be comfortable with them and their goals.  And
after last weekend, “Trust me” won’t hack it any more.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better
than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not
your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your
chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our
countrymen."
- Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia
  State House, August 1, 1776.
