Howdy all, a few Interesting Items for your information. Enjoy –
In this issue:
1. Guns
2. Technology

4. 3D Printing
5. Algeria
1. Miller. An exciting week for gun control last week as the Obama – media
cabal doubled down on their effort to shove new gun control rules and
legislation through the system. The American people were having none of it,
and continued to purchase firearms and ammunition as fast as they hit the
shelves of their local stores. In the end, Obama decided that the senate would
not back any new gun control legislation and opted instead for a mealy mouthed
list of 23 Executive Orders, mostly window dressing, some highly illegal, like
calls for doctors to ask patients questions about gun ownership in violation of
ObamaCare prohibitions against. Some were laughably ironic, like the two
executive orders that directed the creator of the Fast and Furious gun running
program, one Eric Holder to do the following:
Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace
guns recovered in criminal investigations.
Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it
widely available to law enforcement.
Holder was sitting in the front row and Obama made these proposals with a
straight face. OK guys, I’ll play. You go first. Obama and the media
continued to vilify gun owners and the NRA, with Obama presidential campaign
mouthpiece Stephanie Cutter promising to turn the campaign machinery against
the NRA. Anyone else wonder why the Obama presidential campaign apparatus is
still in existence? Obama trotted out a bunch of kids for the Executive Order
announcement, leading a lot of online folks to compare that photo with those of
Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Kim Jong Il, and other dictators all using children as
human shields. The parallels were eerie. Newly reelected Senator Joe Manchin
(D, WV) who had previously been mostly against any new gun control measures
indicated his willingness to consider new ones, leading a number of West
Virginia observers to note that he had been officially bought off by the Obama
WH. I don’t know why anyone is surprised,
as Manchin is a democrat, and with democrats it is always, always “party uber
alles.” The NY newspaper that ran the map of firearms owners in the two
surrounding counties pulled that map off their web site after the second
burglary in two weeks targeting firearms in one of the listed homes. There
will be more. Perhaps their lawyers are concerned about class action lawsuits.
I would posit it is too late. The democrat dominated NY government rushed
through a wildly unconstitutional and illegal piece of gun control legislation
Tuesday. NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, who presided over the setup for the
destruction of the US housing market while HUD Secretary from 1997 – 2001
wanted to be first out of the box with new gun control legislation in honor of
his campaign for president in 2016. Like most legislation out of democrats,
they didn’t read this one either and missed a few things. One of which was the
provision that made every magazine capable
of carrying more than 7 rounds illegal. There was no provision exempting
federal or state law enforcement, essentially turning all of those guys into
instant felons in NY. Note that NY law enforcement carries 9 mm weapons.
Glock 9 mm carry 15 – 17 rounds for the larger weapons. As of this writing,
gun dealers in NY are refusing to sell new magazines and in some cases bullets
to law enforcement citing the new gun control law. The other problem is that
Lake Placid is still home to an Olympic training center that specializes in
Biathlon. The biathlon requires 8 rounds. Hint to democrats: RTFL next time,
boobie. Finally, the NRA is not backing down in the festivities, running an ad
that makes the case that Obama’s kids who attend a private school where there
are 11 armed guards on staff are more important than yours at public school,
which the feds prohibit firearms on the premises. This ad did not go down well
with the left. Too bad. Final
observation is out of some former Easter Block writers who look at things
going on in the US. One comment was that after the 3 million weapons purchased
since Election Day, the Americans are preparing for war. And maybe we are.
2. Technology. One of the arguments we get from the left is why do we need
30-round magazines, assault weapons or the like. This is essentially an
argument that assumes our rights to firearms are based upon the technology
available at the time the constitution was adopted. Really? They then get way
hysterical and start ranting about privately held nukes, aircraft carriers and
M1A1 tanks. Disregarding the obvious logistics problem of ownership of any or
all of those toys in a working order, the principle remains that all are legal
under the provisions of the Second Amendment. If you look at the technology
available at the time of the Revolution, the top of the line weapon was the
cannon, and other smaller weapons ranged down from muskets to hand pistols to a
variety of swords and knives. All of those exist today at some level, but the
technology has improved a bit. On the naval side, there were privately held
ships that were used in service of the
new Republic. This is what the constitutional provision for letters of Marque
and Reprisal are all about. Congress still has the ability to issue such
letters. Today, there are armored vehicles privately held and used by
collectors – not a lot of them, but they exist. There are a small number of
military aircraft privately held and operated. The anti-Second Amendment
people would tell you they are all illegal and their ownership not covered by
the Second Amendment. Now if you apply that identical argument to other
Amendments, interesting things happen. For example, the top of the line way to
get information out at the time of the Revolution was the hand-operated
printing press. It was not mechanized until after 1800. If you buy into the
technology-based argument of the anti-gunners, you also allow the Obama
administration, congress and the media to make laws regarding the production,
dissemination and control of political speech via any and
everything that did not exist at the time of the Revolution. This would
include First Amendment restrictions on all television, radio, telegraph, fax,
e-mail, message board, internet, and anything printed mechanically or
electronically. Nice logic, that, but we must get those evil firearms,
30-round magazines, and assault weapons out of the hands of the Philistines in
Flyover Country.
3. Majority. One of the more troubling things out of the new congress is the
observation that Speaker Boehner has effectively lost control of this majority.
The two big things passed in the last 3 weeks have been the Fiscal Cliff and
the Sandy Relief Bills. In both votes, over 180 House Republicans refused to
vote for either Bill, leaving about 30 or so moderate Boehner loyalists along
with Pelosi’s democrats to vote in support of both, leaving Pelosi’s democrats
now running the show. We have a problem in the House. And it is only going to
get worse.
4. 3D Printing As I watch the machinations over new laws and restrictions on
firearms being proposed by media and democrats, it occurs to me that the left
has lost control of everything. We are seeing the introduction of 3D printing
and computer driven milling producing parts, pieces and entire objects out of
plastics and metals. Recipes for completed firearms are now available on the
internet, with more being available as time goes by. Today, you can find an
el-cheapo 3D printer that prints in plastic and soft metals for the mid-$300s.
You can find a computer operated milling machine in the $3,000 - $5,000 range.
Operating systems and computers are all open systems, which make them
essentially free. 3D printing is now being done with some very light and
exotic metals like titanium and inconel. We are seeing the spare parts
marketplace start to move from one based upon the principle of keeping an
inventory of spare parts on hand at all times to
keeping an inventory of raw materials, recipes and a printer capable of
printing out your parts upon demand. And such an economy will quickly figure
out how to print out more than spare parts. A feral (misspelling intentional)
government that cannot possibly control finished products like cigarettes and
firearms is going to have a terrible time trying to control the raw materials
of weapons production like plastic, metals and springs. Here is an example of
3D printing hobbyists. http://www.3ders.org/
5. Algeria. Al Qaida in North Africa continues to operate, with the latest
outrage being an armed attack against a British Petroleum refinery in Algeria.
They used weapons either captured from Gaddafi’s weapons stores or walked into
Libya by the Obama administration. Over 40 workers in the refinery were
captured in that raid. The Algerian government, with long experience with
Islamist attacks, responded in kind. Few hostages survived. The Obama
administration and its Islamist apologists responded as expected – with
deafening silence. We will see what Misters Brenan, Kerry and Hagel decide to
do about this outrage. I predict laying down belly up.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better
than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not
your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your
chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our
countrymen."
- Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia
State House, August 1, 1776.
