It seems that here at the Odd Farm life is never
ending. I teased about our cats that wouldn't die but in the past year we have
lost 3 of them. However, they were old, 22,19 and 18 respectfully. We brought
Sweetie Pig here thinking she would go anyday. For two years John would look out
the french doors sipping his morning coffee and say, "That damn pig is still
alive.". The goldfish I threw in the water trough 3 years ago is gorgous and
probably will be with us for 20 years.
I guess you could say this family doesn't like
change. I remeber the day I got rid of our old microwave. John and I got it as a
wedding gift in 1985. It was huge and took up space. So I went and bought a new,
smaller one that was so much prettier. Evan, my son came home from school and
cried. He wanted to old microwave back.
When I started endurance riding around 1995, the
only truck we had was "The Black Truck". It is a 1972 Chevy Chyenne. Let me add
here that John loves this truck. Of course every endurance rider has the
continuall quest for the perfect rig. My first trailer was a steel, 3 hourse
slant in a mustard gold color. So we called it the Gold Dome. The Black Truck
and the Gold Dome was a sight to see. We were set.
At the time, The Black Truck didn't look to
bad. But, was not a lean, mean, running machine either. I had my share of
breakdowns, calling John and cussing him out for making me drive such a crappy
truck only to drive it again to another ride. One time Wendy and I were leaving
an exit and as I sped up around the curve, her door flung open! She was grabbing
and clawing so as not to fall out. It was hard for her to hold on to anything
because with no airconditioning and the heater permanenty on, we were both
pretty sweaty. John forgot to tell us there was now a trick to keeping that door
closed. Or did I already know that and forget to tell Wendy?
Tee-hee-hee.
The Black truck was retired from pulling when we
bought the Burb and then the Dodge. Since then it has lost it's glove box and
even the heater doesn't work anymore. The bed is so rusted John can't really
haul anything back there heavier than 50 pounds for fear it will go right
through. One time when I had to move the truck I asked him "How can I tell if I
am in drive or reverse, I can't even see the letters because of all the rust?"
He reached in and tapped on the glass, all the rust fell to the bottom and I
could see P,R and D.
John says one of these days he will get that truck
going past 40 and the wind shear will peel back the roof because there is
nothing holding it to the windsheild.
A friend told me he saw John in his truck.
He asked as bad as that truck looks why does John have brand new tires on
it? I had no answer.
