Greetings,
Before I begin, I
must say my first reaction upon seeing the results was, "God Bless America" for
we are so blessed to have so many hundreds of miles of horse friendly
trails traversing countryside of unimaginable beauty. Please, help
protect our sport's most precious and fragile resource.
From a faxed copy of the results of the
WEG Endurance Preride held April 27, 2002, here are some basic
statistics.
Ride distance: 95
miles
Phase 1: 25 miles into a 30 minute
hold
Phase 2: 17.5 miles into a 30 minute
hold
Phase 3: 24.4 miles into a 60 minute
hold
Phase 4: 15.6 miles into a 40 minute
hold
Phase 5: 12.5 miles
into the finish
The minimum allowed
average speed was 8.1 mph which translates into about a 12 hr ride
time.
The winner's ride
time was 7 hours 49 minutes which is about a 12 mph average speed (2nd
was 10 minutes back). 10th place was 8 hrs 48 minutes (10.9 mph
avg.). The time of the last finishing horse was 11 hrs 31 minutes (8.3 mph
avg.).
Over eleven
countries were represented. 130 riders started, 32 finished for a 25% completion
rate. Of the 130 starters about 35 were from outside Spain. Of the
32 finishers 5 were from outside Spain. The United States started 3
riders: Karen Vilander, Valerie Kanavy, and Jan Worthington. Jan finished
21st on a horse named Zafira. WAY TO GO, JAN!! The Canadians started two
riders, Eve Comrie and Karen Badger.
Six countries
fielded three or more riders. Had there been a team competition, only Spain
would have finished a team.
