The distance was shortened to 80 miles because a section of the trail was dangerously
flooded. Those who rode the remaining trail, 50 or 100 milers, did not see the closed
off section to assess whether they deemed it passable or not. This action is
consistent with AERC rules under the section governing ride managers' discretion to
make trail length adjustments due to dangerous trail conditions. It has occurred at
many rides, most with a much lower profile than Biltmore, so folks seldom take notice.
FEI had nothing to do with it; in fact, the adjustment messed all the FEI stuff up
and had the effect of essentially rendering it cancelled. Ann made a sound decision
as (a great) ride manager within the AERC guidelines, and all riders, FEI or
otherwise, will get mileage credit for the actual miles they completed.
