Subject: my original 'bounced' so i decided to sent to you--please post

Continuing with the email from Ray and Armel. I want to add my comments
to the list.

On the ICDD web page, there is a list of previous winners with topics.
Check www.ICDD.com, where the people, location, and materials can be
found. Several times over the past 8 years, graduate scholarships in
crystallography have also been awarded to students whose Professors have
a Grant-in-Aid. This could give even more support to a Laboratory.

Ray Young has pointed out that about $300,000 has been given away by the
ICDD yearly, to about 40 sites per year. ICDD policy has
previously been 'start small--as a organization proves itself--
delivers good patterns on a timely basis--increase the
number of patterns/year (and hence the money/year)'. Several
groups have had funding 5-8 years. Most sites could start with 5-10
pattern in the first year after they understand what is wanted
for the ICDD PDF. It was/is pretty easy money if you can use the
ICDD funding to supplement an existing larger research contract.

Remember the ICDD customers are mainly from industry, and they
want to have new, important materials, not just substitutional
rare-earth 'soup'. Little support has been made for calculated patterns
because of the ICSD/FIZ and CDS agreements which the ICDD now has
with those organization. The desire seems to be for well
characterized experimental powder diffraction patterns of new phases.
The interest in 're-runs' of existing phases in the PDF
can be done, but there must be a strong justification. The ICDD
also has a list of phases for which they can not find a well-
characterized powder pattern. I remember some Metal/PO4 phases which
powder patterns were desired (and done by one of the Grant-in-Aid
sites).
