Dear Alex,
there are a number of possibilities. If you are reasonably wealthy and do
not mind waiting you could get material from NIST. Alternatively, you can
get silicon, LaB6, Silver behnate and cristobalite reference specimens from
GEM DUGOUT, PA 1652 Princeton Drive, State College, PA 16803 USA. Their
silicon was $5/gram the last time I checked. Or you could go the cheapest
route and buy silicon powder from a chemical supplier. We have used Alfa
Aesar 99.5% silicon powder 325 mesh for some applications.
If you elect to buy silicon powder from somewhere like Alfa, you are no
longer using a standard material. You may run into problems when comparing
your results with those obtained at other labs because your reference
material was not the same as theirs.
