No, this behavior is needed to ensure the consistancy and to be able
to build upon it. If you only want to fill in certain properties,

* set the editable(false) constraint on the properties that you
  don't want to fill, or
* only declare the properties that you want to fill in the
  submission declaration, or
* you can create beans that are merely 'transfer' data structures
and that you can use to declare the submission parameters with,
you should be able to fill another bean with it.

The first sounds like it could be computationally intensive,
judging by other posts I've read. Possibly ugly code, too.

Not at all, it's the recommended approach. We use this all the time.

The third sounds attractive if the "transfer" class is a new
base class for the full class, but since this does not corres-
pond to any class that has any conceptual justification, I can
not justify this approach.

Why not? Backend data storage classes are not the only classes that are important in your system.

The second seems to be the most appropriate.

To me it seems the least appropriate since you'll need to declare each parameter manually and make sure they are in sync with the bean.
