Indeed, it's really a nomenclature that has been decided upon.
Just have to note that it doesn't have to be a one-to-one mapping
between the error message values and the blocks. There's a fall-back
scheme that allows you to for example provide the same text for all
MANDATORY error identifiers. More information about that can be found

Regarding validation identifiers, can you please explain the
reasoning of
using the identifiers as the block names? For example, if
MANDATORY:username is the validation error returned, the
corresponding text
block should be named MANDATORY:username ([!B 'MANDATORY:username']
[!/B].
