sure!
We do that all the time, we generate Excel spreadsheets, PDFs,
images, ... on the fly or stream them from the db.
For Excel, we use http://www.andykhan.com/jexcelapi/ to generate
them, this works very well.
Once you're there, and you're stuck, just ask. I'll give you a code
sample.
