Could a Rife XMLHttpRequest listener simply listen to the
same servlet container port as the normal Rife filter ?
Would I have to do anything special to listen for an
XMLHttpRequest, considering that Rife converts HTTP
requests into calls to ElementSupport.processElement() ?
I guess I'm wondering whether Rife would drop them on
the floor, or somehow pass them without doing all the
"ordinary" processing.

You can do Ajax as-is with RIFE, you don't need to do anything. Just serve the response from a RIFE element. It'll be loaded through XHR and interpreted as you expect.

Btw, RIFE respects HTTP perfectly and doesn't 'convert' any calls actually.

Don't be afraid to try out Ajax, I've had success with Prototype and RIFE, but will probably try out the Yahoo library next.
