As far as I know, this is an intended and useful behavior.
The idea is that if you use an opening and closing tag with an
empty default
value, it is completely erased, but if you combine opening and
closing into a
single tag, it will show up in your generated HTML if it is not set to
something. This is useful when you want to know which tags are not
set to
something.
