Flac is lossless and supports tagging so its ideally suited to archiving
your collection. I don't think you can necessarily call it the best of
breed since there are several other formats that are extremely similar
to Flac. The two huge bonuses of Flac to me are that it is a)
Open-Source and Free and b) its natively supported by the SqueezeBox2.

The only real contender to EAC is Plextools by Plextor but it only
works with Plextor brand drives... and (IMHO) the UI isn't as good as
EAC (which isn't that great in the first place). 

dBPowerAmp Music Converter is another very strong music converter which
supports pretty much all audio codecs. It has a much cleaner and more
simplified UI than Foobar (which is designed to do many things other
than just conversion).
