Flac is lossless and supports tagging so its ideally suited to archiving your collection. I don't think you can necessarily call it the best of breed since there are several other formats that are extremely similar to Flac. The two huge bonuses of Flac to me are that it is a) Open-Source and Free and b) its natively supported by the SqueezeBox2.
