I think the general idea with these protected CDs is that if you
attempt to play them in a standalone CD player then you have a good
chance that it will play them fine - it all depends on how picky it is
about seeing what is strictly speaking not a Red Book CD, and how it
reacts to the deliberate errors.

If you're unlucky in your choice of CD player then you may hear pops or
dropouts rather than normal lossy effects.

The thinking is that the number of standard CD players that will have a
problem is small enough for them not to worry about. Cd-ROMs and in-car
CDs are another matter...
