Did you use the same NEC drive to burn those discs because it sounds like those Audio Cd-R's have been burnt using "overburn" to extend the burn beyond the normal orange book standard? Whilst I haven't tried it myself (as I don't have any overburnt discs), sites on the web outline overburning as a feature that the Plextor PX712a, PX716a and I assume the new PX740a are all capable of. It seems like overburning is a fairly unusual process that will create a disc that is unable to be read by playback devices that don't feature overburning technology.
