I raised a similar query in the beta forum/list (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=58332&postcount=4). This looks to be the solution:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2136 In addition to that, from what I can gather the compilation tag for MP3s is an iTunes-specific one (TCMP) rather than it being part of a ID3v2 specification. This means you might need to use iTunes to tag the MP3 (if you're using MP3s, that is).
