I am a software developer and expect to get paid for my work also.
However I am strongly against to silly pranks most software houses put
on their software to keep users from stealing it. It makes the user
feel like a crook even though the person bought it. Case in point MS
Windows XP, I have paid for 2 Full version copies of it. I have it
installed on 2 machines. One machines motherboard takes a dive (blown
caps), so I replace the board with a different brand and have to
reinstall windows. So I get to register it, and it says I need to call
a number. I call the number and go through the automated system which
says hold on you need to speak with a person. I have to spend time now
explaining to the person why I have to reinstall the OS I paid for. It
would have been faster and easier for me to have stolen a copy. Gee
that DRM sure works ;)

Now, Oracle on the other hand freely allows anyone to download the Full
Enterprise version of their database and is free to use for development
purposes. You are on your honor to pay for the software. They seem to
be doing ok with that model.
