I'm using the latest release of LAME with the new variable bit rate codec, and it's awesome. I use V2 level compression, which typically compresses a FLAC file 5-to-1 while maintaining very near-CD quality.
The ABX blind tests show most people cannot distinguish between CDs and music compressed at this level. I've presently got about 22 days of music compressed to 35 GB, leaving me with plenty of space on my 60GB iPod for new/other stuff. I used the flac2mp3 script to do it, worked very well. -- Mike Anderson 'FREE RADICAL RADIO!'
