Oh, and MARS and Pure Music Audio Player will rip to FLAC and allow you
to tag. But MARS requires one to enter tags manually, though I'm not
sure about Pure Music.

What I need, as I already have files ripped, is something like Media
Rage, that takes a collection of files, and produces tags automatically
for them using the file structure.

As LavaJoe says, a Perl script (or Python) would probably do it. But
the learning curve for me would mean it would take more time than
simply tagging individual files, particularly as xACT will at least
allow me to take a bunch of files and give them a bulk genre or
artist.

Octavian's original post suggests he wants tags for items he is about
to rip, and here there do seem to be programs, though I don't know if
they query CDDB to obtain tags.
