Note that the command-line algorithm only sets
track gain tags, not album tags (actually it sets
the album gain tags equal to the track tags).
Just FYI.
As for the default value, I thought exactly as you
did and I was confused as well, but it does appear
to be 89 dB, at least for MP3Gain. I'm analyzing
MP3s through the command-line MP3Gain, which does
not allow for adjustment of the default volume,
and they come out to 89 dB.
