Good point, as far as Squeezebox is concerned. I guess I was looking for a more generic solution that would apply to portable players as well. But, by definition, "generic" these days means players that only look at title, album and artist.
I do, as you have suggested, call more-than-a-track, less-than-a-disk works "Albums." Of course, now a Random Album is either a single classical work or a whole pop CD. I think I wish instead a Random Song were either a single classical work or a single pop song.
