I've been ripping to .WAV images - 650+ discs so far - until I sorted
out what I wanted to do about compression. (I want images for archival
purposes - I have already found several discs that have gone bad.) Now
the drive is getting full, so it's time for me to start converting to
FLAC. Also I want to start getting the effect of replay-gain. I have
some harp recordings that peak at 40% according to EAC, and random play
likes to put them next to metal that was recorded with the dial turned
up past eleven...

I want to script the conversion, so I guess Foobar is out. I've come
up with the following arguments to FLAC:

--delete-input-file --verify --best --replay-gain --cuesheet=<cue>
<wav>

Is there something else I should consider?

Will the above get me the effect of album replay gain? (I'll be
compressing one wav == one album per invocation of FLAC.)

Right now the cue sheet points to the .WAV file. Will it be okay to
embed it unedited in the .FLAC file? I assume I'll need to edit it to
point to the .FLAC afterward. Is this correct or can I leave it alone
and SlimServer will be smart enough to put it together with the .FLAC
file?

I've noticed that EAC generates cue sheets that start like:

REM GENRE Jazz
REM DATE 1968
REM DISCID 5F069308
REM COMMENT "ExactAudioCopy v0.95b3"
CATALOG 0075990174727
PERFORMER "Vince Guaraldi"
TITLE "Oh, Good Grief!"

SlimServer doesn't get the genre if it isn't in quotes, but EAC (at
least the version I'm using) doesn't put quotes around single words.

SlimServer also doesn't pick up the REM DATE line. It does see a REM
YEAR, if I also put the year in quotes.

It would be nice if SlimServer got everything from a stock EAC cue
sheet. But for now I have a script that goes through and updates
them.

Are there any other tags/REMs I can put into the cue file? I'd really
like something like a "SORT" tag so my Alan Parson Project albums could
go under 'P' without getting ugly and renaming him to "Parsons Project,
The Alan". I'd also like to be able to see / play albums by an artist
in chronological order. (Hmm. Just found a mention of the ARTISTSORT
tag - must check it out.)

Can SlimServer get all this info out of an embedded cue sheet, or am I
better off using an external cue? (Though the replay-gain has to be a
tag in the FLAC, right?)

How can I be able to fast-forward / rewind within a track? It looked
like it should work from the FAQ, but I can't with a CUE+WAVE image -
only move back and forth at the track level.

Is there a way to turn off the common albums feature. With FLAC images,
I won't be scattering the files for an album across my hard disk (I
promise! <grin>). And I seem to have a large number of albums with
common titles. (Like "Celtic Christmas", and every flamenco artist
seems to have a "Spanish Dreams" or "Gypsy Nights".)

Thanks,
