Looking more closely I am fairly certain you are correct! mp3gain gui has 3 clip related columns: "clipping", "clip track" and "clip album". I reckon the clipping column merely shows that the original track was clipped. This makes far more sense because then the louder tracks would more likely have this field ticked which is the pattern i see. Also, if set the level to 100dB and then analyse a file with a track volume of say 83, then the "clip track" field is set which shows that the track is clipped if normalised upward from 83 to 100.
I'm now a happy chappy I think and can continue happily with my automated MAREO stuff.....
