I devised an automated system for ripping.

I had an external CD-ROM attached to the Kuro Box I'm storing music and
used the abcde shell script to automate ripping. It detects a CD in the
drive, go to freedb for tags, rip to FLAC, and eject. And notify me (on
the Squeezebox display, as well as email to my phone/BlackBerry) when
done.

cdparanoia (which is used for audio extraction on Linux) is very good.
I had a CD with a radial groove that was unplayable on any CD player,
and I let cdparanoia chew on it overnight--I now have a rip of the
affected track with no detectable flaws.

The semi-automation was a great boon--I didn't need to babysit a PC
while this was happening, so I could pop in discs at my leisure and get
about 20 done a day, and just keep plugging away at it (1000 CDs).
