While implementing your suggestion, I renamed my original (non-playing) file. After a rescan, slimsever played it! A little more investigative work turned up the problem: when slimserver had originally scanned the files, there was no read permission. Despite later changing the file permissions and rescanning, slimserver did not pick up the change. And importantly, the debug messages were quite misleading.
Anyway, thank you for you comment, it got me where I needed to be.
