FLAC is probably the best long term format. Because it is open source even if the original developers abandon it, someone else can always adopt it. so you don't have to worry about Apple or Microsoft changing the spec and locking you out of your music.
FLAC is also lossless so can be transcoded fairly easily into other formats. I don't have a clue about software for your Mac, but there are loads of apps for Windows that will happily batch convert between formats. I have all my music in two formats, FLAC and MP3.
