My iPod is probably the same model as yours. I was surprised how easy the "upgrade" was and like you figured an unsuccessful upgrade would be a catalyst for a new one. Whilst I like the idea of lossless audio on my iPod, 40GB simply cannot hold enough lossless audio for long haul flights, so I'll be sticking to mp3, but keeping Rockbox.
