I break up my classical CDs into Albums associated with works. I noticed that albumgain can be significantly different for two works on the same CD. Some works are quiet and others loud. So I decided to determine albumgain by treating the CD as an Album.
I now notice the same phenomenon on boxed sets. I normally combine boxed sets into one album and then determine albumgain. But I experimented with determining albumgain (more precisely cdgain) on each CD of the set and was surprised that the cdgain values can vary significantly across the CDs of the boxed set. As it seems unlikely that the CDs of a boxed set would vary significantly with respect to the average quietness of the tracks, Im wondering if I am mistaken in my assumption that boxed sets would be produced so that the recording levels are the same across CDs. Im now inclined to determine albumgain separately for each CD of a boxed set. Is this standard practice? Also, would Slimserver be confused by albumgain values that are not the same for all tracks of an album? For example, one album might be comprised of two CDs, and alubmgain for the tracks on the first CD might be -2 and for tracks on the second CD might be -4. Suppose the entire CD was put into the playlist. Would slimserver know what to do? Feedback is appreciated.
